How to Build Gabion Mattress
Step 1: Erosion Control
Unfold individual mattress on flat, hard ground and stamp to remove kinks. Lift the two long sides and both end panels upright and secure by tying the selvedge wires together.
Step 2: Assembly
Attach vertical edges of all internal diaphragms to the sides and lace with typing wire or approved interlocking wire fastener.
Step 3: Slopes & River Beds
Align assembled mattress in required position and tie to adjacent mattress along selvedge wire. Position with internal diaphragms at right angles to slope direction or water flow.
Step 4: Hexagonal Mesh
Place stone into compartments (cells). For slopes, start from bottom. Multiple mattresses can be filled simultaneously.
Step 5: Erosion Control
Keep stone filling crew ahead of lid placement crew. Securely tie lids to side-tops, end panels, and inner partitions.
Step 6: Form Cut Assembly
Telescope or cut mattresses to form when necessary (e.g., for radius placement). For sharp curves, may need to cut diagonally into triangular sections.
