Gabion baskets are manufactured with hexagonal woven wire mesh, commonly referred to as double twist wire mesh. The steel wire used is heavily galvanized to class A with zinc or zinc alloy (Galfan) coated wire.

For aggressive environments, gabion baskets are available with additional PVC or PE coating over the galvanized wire for enhanced protection.
